Maikohā is the ancestral God of Wauke, the tree used to make Kapa. This piece visually represents Pūko‘a, which is my name, and is also a coral reef. It is made completely out of Wauke fiber and wood, which is why I call it Maikohā. We are all connected, the land, the see, the human world, the spirit world. And everything we do effects everything else. If we think about Pūko‘a and Maikohā as the same, maybe we can understand more fully the connection we have to everything. And if we return to the use of native plants and fibers rather than the poisonous products that now permeate our lives, we can regrow the Pūko‘a that is in great peril. Maikohā can save us all.
