AO NA HINA
The Demi-God, Maui was taught and nurtured by women who gave him powerful gifts. His mother, represented here as Hinaikamalama, Hina in the moon,taught him the secrets of fire, water,and earth. She gave him the magic fish hook, Manaikalani, used to pull up the Hawaiian Islands. His wife, called Hinakeolohaila stolen in battle, also gave him enormous power, knowledge of the stars and navigation. These great women created “ A Chief, Indeed”
